Making it a Personal Battle, Cancer Hits Home for Western Illinois Univ Tekes

(Macomb, IL) – Camping out overnight for 12 hours on Hanson Field, Western Illinois University Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity members and chapter associates began their brotherhood-building activity, with each member and associate wearing a t-shirt that read: “Running for Ray-Ray’s Mom.”
At 5:45 the next morning, the somewhat tired and sleepy-eyed men of TKE’s Zeta-Theta chapter at WIU met their goal of raising over $1600 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, all while strengthening their Bond of Brotherhood and living the TKE purpose of serving their community.
This was the first year that WIU sponsored a Relay For Life – the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event – created to celebrate cancer survivorship and raise money for research and programs for local chapters of the American Cancer Society. The Relay For Life event also represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.
For TKE member Raymond “Ray-Ray” Slover, the hope of a cure for cancer hits especially close to home, as his mother is currently recovering from lung cancer and a stroke.
“People may not think so because she’s so small, but my mother is the strongest woman in the world,” Slover recently said in an interview.
Initially setting a chapter goal of raising $1500, members diligently worked on fundraising for several weeks before the event, waiting tables at local Pizza Hut restaurants and selling raffle tickets outside of Macomb businesses. Their accomplishments were recognized by the ACS and Macomb community, as they received top fundraising honors out of 20 teams participating in the community event.
Not only did the TKE Zeta-Theta members participate in the Relay For Life to honor Slover’s mother, but to also celebrate active TKE member and cancer survivor Ben Boda, who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain and spine cancer when he was 12. Currently a pre-medicine major at WIU, Boda’s cancer has been in remission for six years, thanks to extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
When asked what advise Boda could give to other cancer survivors, he simply said “stay strong and try to take it day-by-day and stay positive.”
“It isn’t often when Greek organizations are recognized for such significant contributions. Not only the money raised, but the participation of this group of men, was exciting to see. After working with this group of men last year, it was awesome for me to see them in such a positive light,” said Leah Dooley, Graduate Advisor for Leadership Programs at Western Illinois University.
