The University of Alabama's chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi has been placed on probation for hazing, but school officials declined to say what prompted the disciplinary action.
The sorority, one of 19 on campus, will serve probation for two years, university spokeswoman Cathy Andreen said Tuesday.
"The probation will not affect their recruitment abilities or the status of their house," Andreen said. "It's a time when they will be monitored more closely and will have to work more closely with the office of the dean of students."
The chapter, founded in 1967 and one of 178 across North America, avoided the more serious punishment of suspension, but probation is a stiffer penalty than a warning.
The Tuscaloosa News, which reported the probation Wednesday, said attempts to reach newly elected chapter president Kristin Bradbury and officials at the sorority's international office in Brentwood, Tenn., were not successful.
The university defines hazing as "any mental or physical requirement or obligation placed upon a person by a member of an organization, individual or a group of individuals, which could cause discomfort, pain, or injury."
Alpha Omicron Pi's Web site spells out its hazing policy: "No chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi nor individual officer or member thereof shall encourage, authorize, ratify or engage in the practice of hazing any of its new members or its members."
In June, the university suspended Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity until April of 2005 for hazing activities.
