Phi Kappa Theta shapes up after IFC boot

After being kicked out of the UNH¹s Intra-Fraternity Council (IFC) in April 2003, the brothers of Phi Kappa Theta decided that they must go on. This summer, the men completed over $100,000 worth of renovations in and around the house on 17 Garrison Ave.
The renovations include an exterior paint job, a new iron fence encompassing the perimeter of the house, a revamped volleyball court and entertainment room, and all new landscaping. Almost all of the labor was done by the brothers, which saved them upwards of $200,000, according to Phi Kappa Theta Public Relations Chairman Rick Fredrickson.
Phi Kappa Theta had been through nearly eight years of probationary periods and suspensions until last April, when they were removed from the IFC. The violations have included underage drinking on PKT property and failure to comply with probationary sanctions.
Although the fraternity has been booted from the IFC and indefinitely suspended from the University, the Phi Kappa Theta National Chapter supports the UNH Chapter completely, according to Fredrickson.
Fredrickson said the fraternity is hoping to be taken back into the IFC.
"That¹s what the ideal situation would be," he said. "However, it doesn¹t look like that¹s in our immediate future."
Steve Pappajohn, coordinator of Greek Affairs at UNH, said he isn't hopeful for the return of PKT into the UNH system.
"I can¹t see them getting back into the IFC anywhere in the near future," he said. Pappajohn was impressed by the renovations made by the brothers.
"It¹s too bad that these guys didn¹t show the same amount of dedication before they were suspended," he said.
"We¹re at a stalemate with the university," said Fredrickson. PKT is holding an open house to show off their completed work and "maybe change some misconceptions that some people have about fraternity houses," said Fredrickson.
