There is no stopping the Omicron Gamma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority, Inc. Since 1997, the ladies of this chapter have been serving the community “through greater service, greater progress.”
The chapter is under new management this year with Tamra Ashbury as president. Last year, Rasheedah Wakeel served as president. “Rasheedah was really business minded and helped organized the chapter,” Ashbury stated. Ashbury was inducted into the sorority in the fall of 2004.
Shamika Pierce is the new Vice President and Nina Yeboah is the Historian/Publicist. “Nina has really stepped up to the plate on promoting our events and getting the word out there,” Ashbury mentioned. “I’m really proud of all our members. We are a small chapter and we all have to step up to get things done.”
Currently, the major goal for the sorority this year is to have more programming and collaborations with other student organizations on campus. In October, the sorority will be working with the Black Student Alliance to host the Masquerade Ball for Halloween for the children of the community. “We are excited about the Masquerade Ball because we are working with children and anything with children we are excited to participate in,” stated Ashbury. The excitement displayed by Ashbury is based on the sorority’s history. In 1922, the sorority was founded by seven young school teachers.
H. Rashad Gibson, president of Black Student Alliance is excited to work with the sorority. “I am really looking for to working with Sigma Gamma Rho as they seem enthusiastic to help the children and the community,” he stated. “We both have a common goal to work children to make sure they are safe and to help the community.” Yeboah is also the Community Service Chair for the Black Student Alliance.
In addition, the ladies collaborated with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc to host EnteRHOneurship. They also plan on working with the Spotlight Programs Board to host a murder mystery theatre dinner coming up next month.
The biggest accomplishment for the chapter is their own suite on the fourth floor of the University Center. The fourth floor of the building is home to other Greek organizations and online media magazine, Rampway Online. “We are extremely happy to have a room on campus,” exclaimed Ashbury. “We are trying to get artwork and décor inside the room. The room has been painted to reflect our organizational colors.”
Besides making an impact on campus, the ladies are engaging in service in the community. In partnership with the NPHC, the organization collected bottled water for Hurricane Katrina victims. They have also collected goods for the battered women’s shelter. A toy drive will be held with First Kids, an agency for foster children and adopting a highway with their graduate chapter, Zeta Alpha Sigma of College Park, Ga.
In the spring, both chapters sponsored a Youth Symposium to help youth deal with the risky business of getting caught up in peer pressuring situations. The major highlight of the event was the guest speaker who was a recovered drug addict that spoke to the children about her battle with drugs.
Zeta Alpha Sigma has always been a major supporter of Omicron Gamma. “Several members of our graduate chapter came through our chapter so we have a good relationship and bond,” Ashbury said. Wakeel, the former president is a member of the chapter.
On the membership recruitment tip, Ashbury declined to disclose details about upcoming plans but she did disclose what the sorority is looking for in potential members. “We are looking for people who are active in the community, individuals who are active and proactive,” she explained. “W e want those who value their education and have high academic standards. Also, a positive attitude and a willingness to work with others is a must.”
“We are a group that makes an impact on campus and a difference in the community,” she concluded. “Watch out, we are on the move.”
