6th Annual Minority Bone Marrow Drive

February 18, 2006, Eastland Mall, Columbus, OH – Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., will host its Sixth Annual Minority Bone Marrow Drive from 1p – 4p at Eastland Mall. There will be on-site bone marrow registration where volunteers will have an opportunity to register with the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) Registry, facilitated by the American Red Cross.

The NMDP is a network of transplant centers, donor centers, collection centers and recruitment groups who assist the NMDP in facilitating transplants for patients around the world. Bone Marrow transplants can be a cure for leukemia, aplastic anemia and used to treat 160 other fatal blood diseases. Every year there are 30,000 new people who need a bone marrow transplant yet sadly seventy percent of patients who need a match will not find one.

And for minorities, the outlook is even more difficult. Because a person’s tissue type is an inherited characteristic which is passed on from parents to their children, research has shown that the chances of finding a matching donor for a patient is GREATER if the donor is from the same Racial/Ethnic background and descent. Currently, over 3.5 million volunteers have joined the national registry, but only small percentages are people of color. African Americans comprise a mere 7.8%. We are currently trying to recruit more minority donors specifically of African, African American, African Caribbean, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and Native American potential donors in our efforts to offer patients a SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated is an historically African American, not-for-profit, service and social organization. Sigma has over 80,000 members in over 410 chapters located in the United States, Bermuda, Germany, the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. Its purpose is education, leadership development and rendering service wherever needed.
